Chapter 5 discusses fiber optics. It explained how the process of a fiber optic system operates, essentially showing how the electrical signal input is turned into an optical signal, and back into an electrical signal.
It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of FO. Advantages include the volume of information it can carry is much larger compared to other communication systems. They ar also immune to radio and electromagnetic interferences. They can be installed in explosive environments. It also allows for a great deal of data securtiy.
Disadvantages include a loss of signal strength, and impurities can be cause from this loss. The cost is also a concern and therefore a disadvantage.
FO is used in laser surgery. I found this part very interesting, because my sister had this type of surgery on her knee.
Fiber optics have helped advance our telephone lines, and they show a promise in the change of how we recieve information and the way we see TV.

Chapter 9 talks about optical disks and holography.

innovations in chapter 1

This chapter shows a few examples of technological innovations that stuck out to me. The software of a PC can help design equipment and systems. This innovation allows new innovations and technmologies to be developed at a faster pace. It opens a gateway of opportunities. Along with the software, the hardware of a computer creates new ways to manipulate information. Pictures and sounds can be edited. The advancement of hardware allows the images to be displayed in a sharper manner. An example of an innovation in the book is photonics. I am not quite clear on what photonics is and exactly what it does.

With these innovations comes positive and negative implications. Positive implications include being able to advance things related to our health system. The imagery of x-rays and other medical images can help heal and prevent tragic things from occuring. Individuals with disabilities are able to communicate with people as well. Our society becomes dependent on these advancements. It would be a shock of someone logged onto their computer and were unable to edit a photo they wanted to, or if there wasn't a way to look at medical pictures in the advancement we are accustomed to today. This dependency may create lazieness. It isn't good expect things without any work. Although there are good outcomes for all of these advances there are negative things that can become of them as well if we are not cautious.
