Chapter 5 discusses fiber optics. It explained how the process of a fiber optic system operates, essentially showing how the electrical signal input is turned into an optical signal, and back into an electrical signal.
It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of FO. Advantages include the volume of information it can carry is much larger compared to other communication systems. They ar also immune to radio and electromagnetic interferences. They can be installed in explosive environments. It also allows for a great deal of data securtiy.
Disadvantages include a loss of signal strength, and impurities can be cause from this loss. The cost is also a concern and therefore a disadvantage.
FO is used in laser surgery. I found this part very interesting, because my sister had this type of surgery on her knee.
Fiber optics have helped advance our telephone lines, and they show a promise in the change of how we recieve information and the way we see TV.

Chapter 9 talks about optical disks and holography.
